At the meeting within the framework of the 28th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the Minister of Environment and Change Climate Change Canada (ECCC) Steven Guilbeault proposed to Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Dang Quoc Khanh that Canada will promote comprehensive cooperation on environment and climate with Viet Nam in the coming time.
At the meeting, Minister Dang Quoc Khanh respectfully thanked Canada for inviting Viet Nam to participate in the "Global Carbon Pricing Challenge" (GCPC) initiative and hope that Canada, with its experience in implementing carbon pricing and developing carbon markets, will support Viet Nam in this field, especially in developing human resources, experience in managing and operating carbon markets.
Minister Dang Quoc Khanh announced that the Prime Minister of Viet Nam, the President of the European Commission and representatives of the Group of International Partners have announced the Plan to mobilize resources to deploy Vietnamese JETP at COP28 and hope that Canada will actively support Viet Nam in implementing the Plan.
Minister Dang Quoc Khanh hopes that Canada will support the effective implementation of JETP to ensure sustainable development, energy security and bring a prosperous and happy life to the people.
On this occasion, Minister Dang Quoc Khanh also asked Canada to support Viet Nam in addressing plastic pollution on the basis of the Global Agreement on Plastic Pollution.
Minister of Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) Steven Guilbeault proposed to Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Dang Quoc Khanh that Canada will promote comprehensive cooperation on environment and climate with Viet Nam next time.
Minister Steven Guilbeault congratulated the Resource Mobilization Plan for implementing JETP in Viet Nam on being announced. Canada is one of the partners implementing JETP in Viet Nam and will actively participate in the implementation process.
Canada has been implementing carbon pricing for 4 years and is ready to cooperate, share experiences and support Viet Nam in this field, as well as develop the carbon market, Minister Steven Guilbeault said. At the same time, Canada also has a lot of experience in reducing methane emissions and will be willing to exchange information and experience with Viet Nam in implementation.
The two Ministers agreed to sign a Memorandum of Cooperation in 2024 and have an annual meeting mechanism to promote cooperative activities.
On this occasion, Minister Steven Guilbeault proposed to sign a Memorandum of Cooperation with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to comprehensively implement cooperative activities with Viet Nam in the fields of biodiversity conservation, environmental protection, responding to climate change, and solving plastic pollution.
The two Ministers agreed to sign a Memorandum of Cooperation in 2024 and have an annual meeting mechanism to promote cooperative activities.
