On November 1st, in Can Tho, German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) coordinated with the Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention and Control (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) to organize Partner Workshop to implement the Climate Change Adaptation Project Mekong Delta (MRD) Phase II.
Since 2019, the Mekong Delta Climate Change Adaptation Project has been implemented in 13 provinces and cities. The project is funded by the Swiss and German Governments with a total amount of 18.35 million Euros. The implementation period is from 2019-2025.
The goal of the project is to support Vietnamese management agencies to improve their ability to adapt to climate change in the Mekong Delta by establishing an institutional framework that promotes regional development linkages and the application of innovative and creative technological solutions in rural and urban areas.
Over the past 4 years, the project has achieved many specific results. Two new technology steel temporary dams were built in Ca Mau to help protect 120 hectares of agricultural land from the impact of saltwater intrusion, stabilizing the livelihoods of 80 households; 21 automatic water monitoring stations were installed in Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, Ca Mau; The improved shrimp-rice production model was successfully piloted on 461 hectares, at two shrimp farming cooperatives in Ca Mau...
The project also organized 5 forums on water management and sustainable development of the shrimp farming industry; guide planning for provinces (3 provinces have announced planning); strengthen natural disaster risk management; improve urban drainage management and combat urban flooding; and water storage solutions.
