On the morning of October 24, in the 6th Session of the 15th National Assembly working program, the group discussed evaluating the results of implementing the 2023 socio-economic development plan and expected socio-economic development plan for 2024. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh spent much time discussing with delegates issues related to investment in development and climate change response in the Mekong Delta region (MRD).
According to the head of the Government, landslides in the Mekong Delta are a big problem. We must not only solve the immediate problem but also build large long-term projects to prevent negative impacts on the Mekong Delta.
The Prime Minister emphasized that through surveys, it can be seen that the Mekong Delta is currently facing several problems, including "subsidence, landslides, drought, and saltwater intrusion". The Government has decided to spend 4,000 billion VND for the Mekong Delta provinces to overcome the above problems immediately. The Prime Minister requested National Assembly delegations to monitor whether the use of resources is sufficient, correct, and adequate.
Projects that need to be implemented are to prevent landslides, subsidence, saltwater intrusion, and climate change. This requires promoting international cooperation and mobilizing resources. For international loan projects, investment must have a focus and key point.
In the long term, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized that there need to be large projects, especially in the provinces: Bac Lieu, Vinh Long, Ca Mau... These provinces have many landslides and land loss due to landslides and severe climate change; therefore, they need large projects to overcome natural disasters.
Since climate change led to severe impacts in the Mekong Delta, the Prime Minister stressed that Vietnam must join the world in preventing global warming. Besides, we must build long-term projects, with projects worth billions of dollars.
