The livestock industry moves towards circular agriculture

On November 1st, The Institute of Strategy and Policy on Natural Resources and Environment (Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment), the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Netherland Development Organization coordinated with the Embassy of Australia to Viet Nam to co-host the Workshop and Exhibition “Platform for the best available environment practice in livestock commercial farm for circular agriculture”.

Vietnam's livestock industry contributes 25.26% to the GDP of the agricultural sector. It is estimated that each year, an average of 61 million tons of manure and over 304 million m³ of livestock wastewater are discharged from main livestock types. The livestock industry has been impacting the environment if livestock waste is not well controlled and will emit more than 15 million tons of CO ₂ equivalent annually.

Speaking at the Workshop, Mr. Phung Duc Tien, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that the Livestock Development Strategy for the period 2022 - 2030, with a vision to 2045, stipulates that localities need to focus on implementing and opening up A new direction for livestock development towards a circular economy ensures effective livestock development. This includes the operation and reuse of livestock waste, quickly overcoming environmental pollution, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, converting green energy, and contributing to the formation of low-emission agriculture to achieve the goal. The Government's goal of net emissions is "zero" by 2050.

Along with the workshop, side exhibitions were also hosted, with the participation of 14 small and medium enterprises providing biogas generator services, equipment, and products for wastewater treatment, waste, and organic fertilizers and providing renewable energy solutions. This is a forum for businesses to share experiences with livestock farms and is also an opportunity to expand domestic and international markets.
