Two trees recognized as heritage trees

The Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment and Hoang Lien National Park (NP) have recently held a ceremony to recognize the groups of fir and rhododendron trees as the heritage trees of Vietnam.

According to the survey results of the Vietnam scientists, neighbouring areas in Fansipan mountain on Hoang Lien Son range and in Hoang Lien National Park (Sapa province) have populations of 56 individuals rhododendrons with 11-15m high. Most of them are about 250 years old living at 2,700m above sea level and making up an area of about 1,000 sq. m,. The scientists also found 36 species of rhododendron in nature with different colours of red, pink, yellow, white and purple. Therefore, it is called the "Kingdom of rhododendron of Vietnam".
Also, the fir group now has 26 trees with 18-20 m high. Most of them are over 300 years old distributing in the core area of the national park. These two trees are also been listed in the red list of Vietnam. The Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) and Indochina Programme recommends to have measures to conserve and propagate these endangered trees.
