On October 17th, in Ha Noi, the annual International Climate Change Viet Nam workshop was held with the theme "IKI Viet Nam 2023: From Commitments to Actions". The workshop aims to enhance exchanges between partners, sponsors, and IKI project implementation parties in Viet Nam.
The International Climate Initiative (IKI) is an essential part of the climate finance commitment made by the German Government. 2023 marked IKI's 15th anniversary with more than 950 projects on climate change mitigation, biodiversity, and activities in more than 150 developing countries and emerging economies. Total sponsorship value reached nearly 6 billion euros.
In Viet Nam, IKI is sponsoring over 500 million euros for bilateral projects and activities within the framework of regional projects. In particular, IKI has implemented 38 bilateral, regional, and global projects in Viet Nam, focusing on four areas: Greenhouse Gas Emissions Mitigation, Adaptation to the impacts of climate change, Conservation and restoration of natural carbon tanks, and Biodiversity preservation.
Speaking at the workshop, Dr. Fabian Hartjes, Second Secretary in charge of Economics and Climate Diplomacy, the German Embassy in Viet Nam, said Germany had identified Viet Nam as one of the countries vulnerable to climate change due to its long coastline. Therefore, Germany pledges to support Viet Nam in achieving climate goals, just energy transition, developing carbon markets, and protecting biodiversity.
In the coming time, IKI Strategy to 2023 will prioritize topics in 3 areas: Energy Transition, Decarbonization of Industries, and Mobility Transition. These three sectors account for almost 70% of global emissions.
