The Government has just approved the master planning on geological baseline survey on minerals for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050.

The objective of the master planning is to complete the geological and mineral mapping at the scale of 1:50,000, to assess the mineral potential of the mainland; environmental geology, toxic and radioactive minerals, urban geology, geological heritage; investigating and discovering minerals in the sea, islands, exclusive economic zone and continental shelf of Viet Nam; timely update and integrate information and results of geological and mineral investigations into the national database.

By 2025, 80% of the area of geological and mineral mapping will be completed at the scale of 1:50,000 of the mainland; complete investigation and assessment of mineral potential in promising structures in the Northwest and Central Central regions.

Investigating and zoning warning zones for landslides and flash floods in high-risk mountainous provinces; survey and map the environmental geology of areas containing toxic and radioactive minerals.

Investigating the characteristics of geological structure, engineering geology, geodynamics and natural resources and environment of coastal waters at the scale 1:100.000; survey geology and minerals in some marine areas to a depth of 300m and 1,500m at the rate of 1:500,000. Evaluation of mineral resources for sea sand exploitation, meeting the demand for leveling and leveling projects of highways and traffic and urban infrastructure.

Accordingly, in the coming period, Viet Nam will conduct geological and mineral mapping at the scale of 1:50,000 of the mainland; geological heritage investigation; geological investigation, assessment of marine mineral resources; detailed investigation of geological hazards (slides, tube floods, flash floods) in high-risk mountainous areas; detailed investigation of environmental geology in areas with toxic minerals; urban geological survey of centrally run cities.

Assessing potential of minerals in the mainland of areas with newly discovered prospect, large scale, necessary and high demand for socio-economic, favorable mining conditions including coal (coal , brown coal), river bed gravel, paving stone, white silica sand, industrial limestone, some important metal minerals (uranium, thorium, rare earths and rare metals, tin, tungsten, copper, gold, etc.,)
